Redding, Bailey jersey numbers retired

Former Monroe Community College pitcher and current Major League Baseball player Tim Redding was honored at MCC's Diamond Dinner Friday evening.  Redding's No. 17 jersey was officially retired and will never be worn again after this season.

Also honored was former head coach Skip Bailey, who was surprised with his No. 26 jersey being retired as well.  Bailey stepped down last season after 11 successful years at the helm of the baseball program.

Redding was an All-American pitcher at Monroe, compiling 16 wins during the 1997-1998 seasons.  He led the nation in earned run average in 1998 and was a 20th round draft pick of the Houston Astros.

Redding now pitches for the Washington Nationals.
A pair of World Series champions were also on hand for the dinner.  Former Baltimore Oriole and Rochester Red Wing manager Joe Altobelli gave an inspiring speech about what it takes to be a pro, while former New York Giant pitcher Johnny Antonelli gave some words of advice as well.

MCC's first head coach, H. David Chamberlain, spoke on the importance of education as well as dedication on and off the field.

As the evening came to a close, current head coach Mike Kelly called upon Shawn and Brooke Bailey, who brought up a framed No. 26 jersey to give to their father.
