Counseling Staff, Student Leader Discuss Student Mental Health on WROC-TV

WROC-TV (Channel 8) aired two segments Tuesday on the prevalence of area college students with mental health needs, compounded by the coronavirus-induced stay-at-home directive.

One is an interview with Aubrey Zamiara, Psy.D., director of MCC's Counseling Center & Disability Services, and with Darlene Schmitt, MSED, LMHC, associate director of SUNY Brockport's Counseling Center. The second segment is an interview with Stephanie Guilin, MCC student trustee.

Both segments mentioned efforts under way by the SUNY Student Mental Health and Wellness Task Force to strengthen SUNY students' mental health supports systemwide.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. MCC's Counseling Center is offering mental health counseling services remotely via phone meetings. Counselors are continuing to provide mental health services for new and returning students who are both enrolled at the College and reside in New York state. MCC counselors are frequently engaging in outreach efforts to assist students with mental health counseling and/or linking students with the appropriate agencies/community partners when applicable.

Information about what the Counseling Center and Disability Services staff have planned for Mental Health Awareness Month can be found in a recent Daily Tribune announcement.
