Rochester AmeriCorps Recognized by County Executive and Rochester Mayor

Members of Rochester AmeriCorps and other local national service programs were publicly recognized yesterday, April 7, with a proclamation from Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks and certificates from City of Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren. These acknowledgments recognize members’ contributions to making our region safer, healthier, and stronger for current residents and future generations.

Across the United Sates annually tens of thousands of volunteers and members of
National & Community Service programs work to address the pressing challenges facing our communities and neighborhoods. Given the many needs facing communities – and the fiscal constraints facing government at all levels – mayors and county officials are able to draw upon the strength of national service as a cost-effective strategy to meet community needs. More than 55 full-time AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA members, and 900 part time Senior Corps volunteers serve in Rochester and Monroe County providing vital support in education, poverty, and youth services. For more information about National & Community Service programs please visit: https://www.nationalservice.gov/.

Rochester AmeriCorps is sponsored by Monroe Community College and is coordinating the event in cooperation with the City and County. The 38 current Rochester AmeriCorps members work to improve the educational and behavioral outcomes of students in the Rochester City School District as well as students' preparation for, and prospects of success in, post-secondary education. Members serve full time for a year in targeted elementary and secondary schools and community-based pre-collegiate programs. Each member provides an array of services which may include tutoring, enrichment, academic supports, attendance supports, and college and career prep services. Members build meaningful relationships with the students that help to foster a positive school climate and a culture of success.

Rochester AmeriCorps is currently recruiting members for the 2015-16 term of service which begins September 14, 2015. For more information please visit: www.rochesteramericorps.org.

Other local service providers recognized last evening included: Rochester Youth Year VISTA, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Foster Grandparents of Monroe County, Senior Companion Program, Cooking Matters AmeriCorps, and the Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps VISTA program.
