Passing of Retiree Hugh Shields, Auditor


I regret to inform you that Hugh C. Shields, retired auditor, passed away on Friday, May 15 at the age of 88.

Mr. Shields worked at MCC for 18 years as an auditor in the Administrative Affairs Division. He also taught as an adjunct assistant professor in the Civil Service Training Program.  In 1982, he earned the designation of Certified Internal Auditor from The Institute of Internal Auditors.  In the late 1980s, he served as acting controller. Over the years, he also availed himself of the opportunity to take MCC classes. He retired in 1988.

Mr. Shields is survived by his children Betsy (Douglas) Astolfi, Michael (Carol) Shields, Mary Susan Clancy, Christopher Shields (Mary McDonald), Stephen (Alicia) Shields, Catherine (Gary) Squires, Barbara Shields, Peter Shields (Ace Werner), John Shields (Gina Pinotti), and Joseph (Amy) Shields. He is also survived by nearly 30 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and his brother, Thomas Allen Shields. He was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Dooling for 61 years.

He was a graduate of Iona Preparatory School and Columbia University. He was  World War II veteran.

A private funeral Mass and graveside service will be held in Redwood, NY, site of the family's summer cottage.
