President's Wednesday Message

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion."

--the 14th Dalai Lama

Soon you will receive this year's holiday card, designed by MCC student Jamie Reinhold. It has "compassion" as its theme. In thinking about how to visualize the spirit of compassion, she reflected on the thoughtfulness that goes into sending a handwritten card or note in this digital, social media age. Jamie has captured the kindness and care for others that defines us and is at the heart of our College at its very best. Her beautiful imagery is filled with the same thought and care. I know you join me in thanking Jamie for sharing her talents with us and in thanking Professor Kathleen Farrell for inspiring her students to rise to their gifts.

The spirit of generosity and compassion that fills our College during the holiday season should warm all of our hearts. In so many ways, our community reaches out to help others: serving meals to those who would otherwise go hungry; providing coats and gloves to those who would otherwise face winter without; gifting toys and books to children who otherwise would not receive a share of the holiday's bounty; and so much more. In giving to others, we bring joy into their lives and into ours.

The annual MCC Holiday Reception, December 13th at 3:30 pm, offers an opportunity to celebrate the season with colleagues and friends and a chance to support our students' dreams for a brighter new year. My family will once again match each $1 donated to the Dreamkeepers financial emergency fund up to $1,500.

Thank you for the gift of compassion you bring to our students and our College; may it bring happiness and joy to you this holiday and everyday.
