MCC Toastmasters Speak at Benefit and Documentary Screening

Ilene Benz (VAPA), Diane Navarro DeHond (Instructional Technologies) and Joe Sturnick (Law and Criminal Justice) presented at Speaker's Showcase, a December 3rd fundraising benefit honoring fellow Toastmaster Diane Paradise.  The event drew 60 people and raised $ 2,200 towards Paradise's treatment for Hodgkin's Disease.

Working from Toastmasters' Speaking to Inform Advanced Manual, Benz presented "Say What?", a demonstration talk which underscored the importance of articulation.  In addition, she introduced two speakers and served as an evaluator for several others.  DeHond  encouraged attendees to "Be Assertive!" in her 12 minute speech from the Interpersonal Advanced Manual.  With the help of Sturnick, a member of the Postprandial Toastmasters Club, she demonstrated ways to apply assertiveness skills in real-life situations.  Sturnick, like Benz, spoke from the Speaking to Inform Advanced Manual.  His presentation,  “The Human That Could Do Anything”, focused on the limitlessness of human potential.

Earlier that morning, DeHond spoke at a screening at the Little Theatre of Everyday Heroes, a documentary film on national service were she shared her experiences as an AmeriCorp member.   Event organizers lauded her for bringing a "realness and a face to national service."  The Rochester Volunteer Collaborative sponsored the event and Maureen McGuire of Channel 8 hosted.
