Visiting Professor from Cancun, Mexico to speak on Economics, Tourism & Sustainability - Wed 12/7

Is Cancun today a Sustainable Tourist Destination?

Come hear Dr. Christine McCoy, Research Professor in Business & Economics at The University of the Caribbean in Cancun, Mexico.   The lecture will focus on economics, tourism and sustainability as they intersect in Cancun, Mexico, a planned tourist town built 45 years ago in Mexico. At the time this was an innovative vision because it contemplated a balanced and sustainable tourist destination with interesting opportunities of employment and investment, always in harmony with the natural environment.  Dr. McCoy examines how Cancun has lost its sustainability and the impact of over four million tours a year.

Dr. McCoy is partnering with Business professor Sherry Tshibangu in a COIL collaboration.  They are both US-Mexico Multistate SUNY COIL Program Academy Fellows* and Dr. McCoy’s visit is part of that collaboration.

* Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an initiative of the SUNY COIL Center, of which MCC is an active member.  The COIL method links a class at SUNY with one at a college or university abroad. The COIL model does not merely promote courses where students from different countries share an online classroom. Rather, we create team-taught learning environments where faculty from two cultures work together to develop a shared syllabus, emphasizing experiential and collaborative student learning.

SUNY COIL’s Multi-State COIL Program (MCP) is funded in part by the US Embassy and Department of State and seeks to increase inter-university collaboration between Mexican and US institutions through COIL-enhanced courses that link students, professors, and staff, contributing to greater intercultural understanding and cross-border dialogue.
