Article Highlights Initiative in Establishing Model for Health Care, Human Services Career Pathways

The front page of the Rochester Business Journal's Dec. 10 issue includes an article about MCC's recent $4 million grant award to establish a sustainable model for long-term career pathways that expand the health care and human services talent pools.

Through its System Transformation and Community Investment Program, Finger Lakes Performing Provider System (FLPPS) is partnering with MCC and other SUNY community colleges and partners in the region in the initiative to provide opportunities for more diverse individuals to achieve economic mobility. FLPPS is providing $4 million in funding for the project, with MCC as the lead community college in the initiative.

Marcy Lynch, Ed.D., director of health care programs at the Downtown Campus, was interviewed about the labor market data analysis provided by MCC's Economic and Workforce Development Center that was the impetus for the initiative.

“One of the things we found is that older, entry-level health care workers are unlikely to be able to upscale to LPN or RN,” Dr. Lynch was quoted in the article. “A pretty large majority are single moms. They have to work full-time, if not full-time and overtime, to support their families. They can’t afford to cut back to go to school.”

Katherine Rogala, senior director of program management for FLPPS, was also interviewed. “The model provides for entry points to a career in health care," she said in the article, "and it enables students to achieve goals and obtain financial stability.”
