Women's soccer, volleyball wrap up seasons at nationals

The MCC women's soccer and volleyball teams each competed at NJCAA national tournaments over the weekend.

The  women’s soccer team concluded another successful season, finishing third at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I national tournament at Darton College in Albany, Ga.

The Tribunes finish the year with a record of 19-0-3.  MCC was the two-time defending national champion.

Monroe, the top seed, opened the tournament Thursday with a 4-0 victory over Navarro College (Texas). Kerrie Brown and Leighana Krzyzanowski scored goals, as did Aveann Douglas and Stephanie Perrotti. Katie Kopp made two saves in goal to earn the shutout.

The Tribunes then fell in the semifinals on Friday, losing in penalty kicks 4-2 to Iowa Western CC.  The two teams played through regulation and two 10-minute overtimes without finding the back of the net. Rachel Murphy and Jennifer Bordoni converted PK’s for the Tribunes, but the Reivers came out on top to advance to the championship game.

MCC finished the tournament on Sunday, topping Schoolcraft College 3-1 to capture third place.  The Tribunes spotted the Ocelets a 1-0 lead early in the second half before responding with three goals in a span of 11 minutes to take control.

Roisin Havelin started the scoring with 24:58 remaining.  Brown added the eventual game-winner with 16:57 left and Murphy tallied an insurance goal three and a half minutes later.  Kopp finished with seven saves. Brown and Krzyzanowski were named to the All-Tournament team.
