Engineering Competition

MCC’s engineering competition for high school students was recently featured in a national company magazine. The article acknowledges the value of MCC’s competition– even though the author considers us to be “nearby” Port Ewen, which is “nearby” Kingston. Many thanks to Bob Lasch for sharing the article.

Classy Project By Brad Branham

Mark Harris, Computer Design and Manufacturing instructor at Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Center, Port Ewen, New York, was a man with a problem. He’d heard about the new mini-chopper building event at nearby Monroe Community College’s High School Engineering Competition, and thought it might be a good project for a few of his students. The problem was: time. He discovered the new addition to the contest a little late, so there was not much time until the competition. But three of his students decided to take on the project with only a month to complete it.

Applying the techniques taught at Ulster, the students designed and fabricated components for the mini-chopper using Mastercam® and the school’s CNC machine tools. “We have seven CNC machines, and they are all Haas,” Harris explains. “We have a VF-1 and two VF-E vertical machining centers, HL-1 and HL-2 lathes, and two TL-1 Toolroom Lathes. They’ve been very good to us.”

As the time factor became more critical, the whole class pitched in to help. “It was pretty impressive to see these guys work,” Harris said. “They came in on their spring break when they could have been doing something else. They put in some long evenings. At 10 o’clock the night before the contest, they were still putting the bike together– and it paid off.”
