President's Wednesday Message

Each new year brings new resolutions and changes. So, I thought I'd kick off the 2018 Wednesday Messages with one of each:

One of my perennial resolutions is to read more and more widely. My colleague at Montgomery College, President Derionne Pollard, has started a community college presidents' reading group. Our first book is Matthew Desmond's Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize. Desmond captures the impact of the economic fragility that many of our students face and pushes us to see that the issues of poverty and safe/secure housing are fundamentally linked. I thought I'd see if there's interest in having an MCC reading group on the same book; we would meet once a month at the Downtown Campus. When we've finished Evicted, we could select another title. If you would like to participate, email me directly.

One change I'll be making in the new year is around my open office hours. Over the past few years, the office hours have drawn faculty, staff, students, and even alumni. Occasionally, a visitor during office hours would take me on a tour of a lab or project, and that gave me an idea. Rather than have you come to my office, I'd like to go to yours: invite me to your department or division office or meeting. Share your ideas and innovations, concerns and challenges: the time is yours. There will be two opportunities each month. If you're interested, contact Sheila Strong at: sstrong@monroecc.edu.

As always, you're welcome to share your thoughts in the comments section of the blog.
