Calling Hours, Services for Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Gerard Nobiling

Colleagues have graciously shared that calling hours and a funeral mass are scheduled next week for Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Gerard “Gerry” Nobiling.

Professor Emeritus Nobiling passed away in December 2020 at the age of 84 (obituary). After an “initial goodbye” in Iowa City, Iowa, his family looked forward to celebrating his life in Rochester with family and friends.

Calling hours will be held 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 29 at Anthony Funeral & Cremation Chapel, 2305 Monroe Ave., Brighton. A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 30 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Anne Church, 1600 Mt. Hope Avenue, Rochester. The mass will be livestreamed at https://youtu.be/fttBZXphOwc; a recording will also be available at the same website address. Following the mass, there will be a processional to an inurnment site at Ascension Garden, 1900 Pinnacle Road, Henrietta.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Nobiling; three children, Timothy (Bonnie) Nobiling, Heidi (Brian Grassi) Nobiling, and Kevin (Amy) Nobiling; his sister, Ann (Dr. James) Keeven; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; as well as many extended family members.

Professor Emeritus Nobiling earned his master of science degree in chemistry from Marquette University and bachelor of arts degree from St. Louis University. He also attended St. Procopious College, Niagara University, and SUNY Oneonta.

His MCC career began as an instructor of chemistry in 1963 at the Alexander Street Campus. His leadership and dedication to academic excellence went beyond the classroom. His inspiring service to the college included serving as chairperson of the Chemistry Department and the Educational Policies Committee. He served as president of the Faculty Council (Faculty Association) and as a member of the Faculty Association’s Negotiating Committee. He also contributed to efforts to evaluate and maximize the impact of educational systems and the Academic Affairs division.

Professor Emeritus Nobiling retired from the college in 2002. MCC Trustees honored his distinguished career by bestowing the title of professor emeritus.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Nature Conservancy, Maryknoll Missions Fathers and Brothers, or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
