Kate Smith and Terry Shamblin Selected to Participate in New League for Innovation Research Project

It gives me great pleasure to recognize the Transitional Studies Department and announce that Kate Smith, Associate Professor, and Terry Shamblin, Assistant Professor, have been selected to participate in the League for Innovation’s Global Skills for College Completion (GSCC) research project.  This groundbreaking project is sponsored by the Gates Foundation and is structured to recognize and place talented and knowledgeable developmental education faculty as leaders, transforming pedagogical practices, and setting new standards and benchmarks for achievement in basic skills classrooms.

The League received more than 40 applications for the GSCC project and only 26 faculty members from 16 different community colleges across the country were selected as master developmental education teachers.  This two-year project is designed to create innovations that will transform how we teach and think about basic skills instruction in English and mathematics in the United States.

A series of virtual activities that create a digital community include pedagogical circles, faculty ePortfolios, Jams, and Choice Events, all of which will provide a platform for discussion and sharing.

It promises to be a meaningful opportunity for the faculty, the College, and especially our students.

Congratulations to Kate and Terry!
