TCC: Register Closing for October's Adjunct Supper for Success - Practices that Promote Retention

Please register for the October Supper for Success by Monday!

Often we look for discrete teaching strategies to improve student learning without understanding the underlying theories. Understanding the why before the how can help us implement strategies more effectively. In this interactive remote workshop, we will explore theories related to the CARE practices, the strategies that promote retention at MCC. Faculty will have time to apply theory to their specific teaching. We will use a specific technique called “tagging” that is used to help faculty identify practices in their own and others’ work.

This workshop will model the types of asynchronous activities that frame our new Blackboard course “Theory in Action”. It will be an opportunity to dip your toe into that course before committing to it. (You can learn more about the Theory in Action Blackboard course he re).

Where do these practices that promote retention come from?

A few years ago, Jason Anderson (CHE/GEO) completed a qualitative research study with faculty from MCC who had the lowest rates of student withdrawals in their classes. Through class observations and interviews, four themes emerged as faculty practices that promote student retention at MCC. These are known as the CARE practices (see attached).

This month’s presenter is Gena Merliss, coordinator of the Teaching and Creativity Center.
