Professor Janice Volland to Represent Faculty at the 2021 Commencement as the Faculty Marshal

Leading the ceremonies for the 2021 Commencement will be Faculty Marshal, Janice Volland.  In her role as Faculty Marshal, Professor Volland will not only represent MCC faulty as a whole but will also serve to acknowledge the important role the health services faculty played during the pandemic.

After 40 years as a nurse in our community and 36 years at the College, Professor Volland will be retiring from MCC this June.  MCC was lucky to have faculty such as Professor Volland to lead both our students and the College during this past year.  Over her tenure at MCC, Professor Volland has taught virtually every course in the nursing curriculum and stated that being a part of a program that offers students the opportunity to become registered nurses has been a gratifying and rewarding career.  When Professor Volland started working here, instructors were using filmstrips, videotapes, typewriters, and an actual blackboard with chalk; fast forward to the pandemic where students are learning with virtual digital clinical experiences and instructors are using two computers simultaneously, a smart phone, and a smart TV to deliver content. One thing that hasn’t changed over that time is Professor Volland’s clear commitment to the nursing profession.

Professor Volland was a leader in the nursing program and at the College.  In addition to her primary role as an instructor, Professor Volland served as a course coordinator, committee chairperson, community coordinator, senator, faculty association teaching director, department mentor, department chairperson, college-wide mentor, and as the president of the Genesee Valley Nurses Association.

The hundreds of nursing students whose lives Professor Volland has touched and the countless faculty she has mentored and worked shoulder-to-shoulder with over the past four decades are all better for having worked with her.  Working and living in a small community such as Rochester has allowed Professor Volland the opportunity to see countless former students in action—all eager to tell her how being an RN has changed their lives.  Please help me in congratulating Faculty Marshal Volland on a storied and fruitful career.
