MCC Upward Bound Students Lead Online

Due to the disruptions to home and high school caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Rochester, the MCC Upward Bound (UB) programs have implemented several online initiatives to maintain connections with our students.

Members of the Student Leadership Team – Sheyranna, Morgan, Hillary, Tatiyana, Jordan, Kasim, and Steven – attend Zoom meetings every other week to help plan and later lead various UB events.  The student leaders coordinate Family Time & Workshops, which are a time for students to have fun and learn about various college and career experiences from special guests. The leaders have interviewed UB alum Theo Adams and MCC Public Safety official Sarah DeLaus. They have also hosted virtual games such as Kahoot!, online trivia, Skribbl, online Pictionary, and Scattergories.

The UB student leaders hosted a major event, the Virtual Holiday Meet & Greet on Thursday, December 17. Thirty students attended the event, in addition to UB and MCC staff such as Pre-Collegiate Programs director Shawanda Evans. The leaders ran a variety of activities such as a Skribbl competition, crafts and Kahoot!. Tatiyana, a World of Inquiry senior, hosted and ran the opening slideshow. Students who participated expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the “stress free” get together, and gave one another shoutouts in the chat.

Connection can be hard to maintain during this time of physical isolation but we continue to build relationships with our students by being flexible and letting them lead.
