ATC hosts Enrollment Enhancement Events for the Month of May

The month of May proved to be a busy month for the staff at the Applied Technologies Center with 3 major recruitment events. The High School Machining Competition, High School STEM Skills Competition and Techno Nuggets Seminars. Each of these events was an effort to increase awareness of the programs housed at the ATC.

The High School Machining Competition was held on May 5th and consisted of 34 students from 8 area BOCES Centers. The competition included a manual mill and lathe project where a student would have to create a part using various skills in manufacturing technology from a print created by MCC instructors. There was also a Computer Numeric Control (CNC) competition in which students would use CAM software (MasterCam) to program, create, and finish a part from a print produced by MCC CNC instructor Paul Brennan.

The High STEM Competition saw over 150 students competing in 4 different STEM Skill events on May 19th. High schools from as far as New Jersey competed in the multi-event competition. Sumo Bot Battle, Bridge Build Efficiency Contest, Bridge Build Design Contest and Auto Safety Car Crash were all contested and made for an exciting day for the High School STEM students. The Sumo Bot battle double elimination competition involved 2 student designed and built robots that battle to knock each other off of an 8 foot round table in a 2 minute time period. The bridge build efficiency & design contest demonstrates many engineering factors such as design, loading tolerance, truss location, material selection and other factors students consider while building these bridges. The Auto- Safety Car Crash test was performed too. In this event, students would have to design a car chassis to withstand a collision into a concrete block from a 5 foot 45 degree angle sloped ramp. Other factors considered in this event are design and uniqueness of the car, some students installed small radios and custom paint jobs to their chassis. The entire event was a huge success.

The last event was hosted on Friday 26th by the ATC Staff and was designed to target area Technology Teachers and Counselors to highlight the innovative work being done in Optics, HVAC/R, Automotive and Advanced Manufacturing. Industry experts gave hands on demonstrations in Optics (Jim Vankouwenberg, Optimax), Geothermal Technology (Tom Piekunka & Sean Beahon of Kenron & RF Peck), Variable Refrigeration Flow Technology (Jason Signor of LG Electronics) 4 wheel independent alignment workshop with MCC Automotive Instructors Eric Strong and Mark Kelly and finally Machining an Archimedes Spiral with MCC Machining Instructors John Gianetti, Pat Bolton, Dave Mancuso and Dan Cory.

Thank you to the following staff members for making these events a great success for the college; Robert Lasch, Vicki Rocha, Denee Martin, Don Howard, John Rodman, Mike Organek, Heather Lieb, Ross Micali, Jeremy Braund, Sam Nicodemus, Mark Kelley, Kevin French, Pat Bolton, Paul Brennan, Darwin Snow, Dan Cory, Dave Mancuso, John Giannetti and Juanita Leone.
