Quotes That Inspire

MCC has dedicated Academic Year 2020-2021 to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. As we look to go beyond statements and take action, the webinar presentation by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. last week inspired members of our campus community to reflect and act upon how we become an anti-racist institution. Professor Laurie Palmer, Director of our Nursing Program shared this quote from Ibram Kendi, one of the author's cited by Dr. Moore.

"To be antiracist is a radical choice in the face of history, requiring a radical reorientation of our consciousness."

- From "How to be an Antiracist" by Ibram Kendi

Professor Palmer shared her thanks for last week's discussion, which she believes was a welcomed first step and will help guide our institution to a '#becomingantiracist' community. I join her in shared hope that the MCC community begins to make the radical bold choices necessary to move us to meaningful and impactful action. As Dr. Moore pointed out, "our entire community's health depends on us doing so."

Thank you, professor Palmer. There may be times when we are powerless to prevent acts of injustice or racism, but there should never be a time when we allow those injustices to be silenced. MCC remains committed to ensuring that all employees and students, regardless of race or background, are valued and respected. I am hopeful that the trajectory of our community and nation will continue to turn towards that of liberty and justice for all. Let it continue with us - here at Monroe Community College.
