Four English Faculty and their connection to the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival highlighted in Rochester Magazine

Professors Maria Brandt, Pamela Emigh-Murphy, Elizabeth Johnston, and Angelique Stevens from the English/Philosophy Department were highlighted in September's issue of Rochester Magazine.

The article describes the evolution of their writer's group, Straw Mat. Straw Mat is a writer's group of the four professors who challenge and inspire each other to write and to workshop original works that will ultimately compete in the public space of the literary world. Their works, as varied as their membership, include poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and drama. As a group, they have won a number of awards, including a Pushcart Prize nomination. They have published nationally and internationally in a variety of academic and creative venues, and produced short and long plays at theater companies.

FourPlay is the first collaboration between the four professors of Straw Mat.  It is made up of four original one-act plays written by each member. The plays are bound together by a single straw met, weaving characters in a plot line that challenges historic images of women. One story brushes against the next, teasing the audience, prolonging satisfaction, asking questions about what it means to desire, to submit, to consent, to trust, to seize power, to relinquish power, and to play. There will be two performances next week.
