President's Wednesday Message

This is the time of year when gifts seem to appear magically: a car topped with a giant red bow in the perfectly shoveled driveway; the brightly colored candy that transforms into sparkling diamonds; the full spread of holiday treats that leave no kitchen mess.

But lasting gifts do not appear out of thin air and are rarely wrapped in a huge red ribbon. In fact, at the time, we may not recognize them as gifts at all -- the assignment turned in on time; the classes attended; the appointment made and kept; the question that reveals the reading was really done; the recognition of responsibility; the hallway conversation about goals; the quick "thank you" at the end of the term.

Scattered throughout a year, none of these seems destined for wrapping paper and celebration. Yet we often secretly celebrate them nonetheless, because each of these small steps will lead our students to their most important walk: the one across the stage at Commencement. And, on that day, we can recall an individual difference-making moment for each shiny piece of confetti that drifts down upon our remarkable graduates.

Thank you for the every day, real life, hard won, no-illusions magic you perform all year long at MCC. You are the reason our students are inspired (and pushed and pulled and guided and more) to succeed. I hope you are able to join us on Thursday afternoon as we celebrate your dedication to our students and our mission--and the many small moments that add up to another outstanding year at MCC!

What was one of your favorite moments of the last year? Share it on the blog.
