MCC Daily Tribune

President's Wednesday Message

At the February 5 Board of Trustees' meeting, I shared the results of MCC's participation in the Gallup Q12 survey; these results were in yesterday's Daily Tribune. First, I want to thank you for taking part: the College's response rate was 44%, a high figure for surveys. Second, I want to assure you that MCC is taking the results seriously and using them to adopt and change practices. In fact, the Board of Trustees has already directed a change that will occur in the next month.

As a reminder, the Q12 survey measured employees' engagement across 12 standardized questions and six custom questions selected by MCC. Four survey questions focused on perceptions of the weight given employees' opinions, their ability to provide input into changes that affect their work, the degree to which diverse opinions are valued, and the openness of our communications. These items carry some of the lowest scores on the survey, with an average of 3.06 as compared to the overall average of 3.51.

The Monroe Community College Board of Trustees is charged with policy and governance at the institutional level and knows that MCC's success at every level, including policy-making, relies on the engagement of our full College community. The Trustees are committed to openness and transparency in the policy process by providing a way for all employees and students to share their comments on policies under consideration. To this end, the Board of Trustees has asked my office to create a new online process to make it easier for employees and students to learn about proposed and significantly revised policies and to offer feedback and input.

Over the next month, we will be creating a Policy Review Portal to accomplish the following:

  • Inform the full College community of proposed and significantly revised policies under consideration by the Board of Trustees
  • Provide an online comment form to allow all employees and students to submit feedback on each posted policy for 30 days before Trustees receive the policy for a first reading

The Trustees will receive the feedback on each policy and will take this input under consideration between the first and second readings of the policy on the Board agenda and may request more information or revisions based on the comments.

This new practice will begin with the Board of Trustees April 9 meeting, so look for the new Policy Review Portal in March.

The creation of the new policy portal supports MCC's commitment to including the full diversity of College voices and perspectives in key decisions and underscores the Trustees' commitment to transparency and inclusiveness. I thank the Board for instituting this new process and for immediately taking action in response to the results of the Gallup Q12.

If you have thoughts or questions related to the survey results or the new policy portal, please share them on the blog.
