Professor Melany Silas (Health and Physical Education) was honored as a nominee for the Arts & Culture Champion Award presented at the 2nd Annual Community Champions Awards Banquet early this month. Melany’s company MJS Productions was honored for her original Choreopoem/Stage play “Sisters Do You Hear Me?” - a production surrounding the impact of HIV on women who are both infected and affected. Melany’s nomination was among that of the Baobob Cultural Center and the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival.
Additionally Melany has just been elected President of the Rochester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The chapter is a part of the national body which recently celebrated 100 years of service internationally and the local chapter will be celebrating its 50th year of service to the Rochester community next year. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. implements programming around social justice, financial fortitude, and health and wellness(to name a few) in which they have partnered on a number of activities over the years with the Health and Physical Education Department.
