Death of Mark Preston

I am deeply saddened to inform you that this weekend we lost a colleague. Mark Preston, senior technical assistant in the Services for Students with Disabilities Office, passed away Saturday, July 30. Mark was also an alumnus of MCC.

MCC honored Mark in 2008 as one of 15 alumni making a difference in our community. In addition to his work linking physically and learning challenged students with the assistive technology they need to get the most out of their MCC experience, Mark was also a leader, advocate and role model for individuals with physical disabilities well beyond MCC’s walls.

Disabled from an automobile accident in 1982, Mark turned the challenges he encountered into inspiration for a lifetime of helping others. He served on the board of New York Outdoors Unlimited, a not-for-profit organization that links people who have disabilities with the resources they need to enjoy outdoor sports. He also counseled others in adaptive sports through SportsNet, a program that connects people with disabilities with many sports. He was a board member for Victor Community Youth Baseball, and coached the Victor girls’ softball team.

He came to know the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities while a student—he earned a liberal arts degree in 1996—and soon began working there part-time. The part-time position turned full-time in 2000.

As soon as details of funeral arrangements are known, we will share them via the Tribune.

Counseling services are available in the Counseling Center for students and via the office of Human Resources and Organizational Development for employees.
