Mass Extinctions Presentation via Zoom by SUNY Geneseo Paleontologist

Fossils preserved within rocks record the appearances and extinctions of life forms over Earth's history. This year's annual presentation by the Rochester Committee for Scientific Information and co-sponsored by the Chemistry and Geosciences Department focuses on the study of fossils (paleontology) in the rock record over geologic time. Dr. D. Jeffrey Over is an internationally known paleontologist at SUNY Geneseo whose main interest is using conodonts (tooth-like remains of extinct eel-like marine animals) as stratigraphic markers and correlation tools, especially for NY Devonian shale formations. Dr. Over has worked in many states, countries (such as Mongolia, Morocco, Canada), and on several continents in his quest to improve geological knowledge concerning geologic time boundaries and major extinction events in earth history. He has been closely involved with the Pander Society and is currently working on the revision of the New York State Devonian Stratigraphic Chart. He also teaches courses on the "History of Life" and "Dinosaurs". He received his Bachelor's Degree from Allegheny College in PA, Masters from the University of Alberta and PhD from Texas Tech.
