Assistant Professor Michael Boester (Chemistry/Geosciences) and Adjunct Instructor Tim McDonnell (Chemistry/Geosciences) were featured speakers at the New York City Summer Geography Institute in Jackson Heights, N.Y. in July 2009. The five-day conference was entitled “Make Connections with Geography” and sponsored by the New York Geographic Alliance (NYGA) and the Association of Teachers of Social Studies/United Federation of Teachers. The NYGA seeks to promote and improve geographic education from kindergarten through university throughout New York state. As a discipline, geography is disappearing in our schools, and more than ever, there is a need to revitalize geographic education in the state's classrooms.
Boester presented “Israel: Connecting Landscapes and Religions” and “Cemeteries: Connecting Past and Present.” McDonnell presented sessions on watersheds and topography and “NY Connections” such as the Erie Canal and the Underground Railroad. McDonnell also serves as co-coordinator of the NYGA which has its main office at MCC and project director of the National Geographic grant.
