Chancellor Malatras Issues Statement Reflecting on 2020 and Looking Forward to 2021

The following statement from SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras was issued on Dec. 31, 2020:

“Even during our darkest days of a tumultuous year—living through a global health crisis, a struggling economy, and social unrest—we found many points of light in our SUNY community. Time and time again, we witnessed selfless acts from individuals in our community who stepped up and gave back: our medical students, nurses, researchers, faculty, professional and support staff, and many others who made the impossible, possible. Most importantly, I’m proud of our students—the lifeblood of our community—who adapted, persevered, and worked harder than ever before in order to achieve their goals of a college education. When it seemed like our community could do no more, when it felt like the task was insurmountable, we kept going until the job was done.

This year has been marked by social distancing, yet the SUNY family came together stronger than ever before. As we close this chapter, the light emanating from across SUNY will help overcome the darkness for a brighter 2021. Let us carry forth our strength, intuition, and selflessness.

I am proud to be part of the SUNY family. Happy New Year.”
