Summer Hours at MCC - Additional Details

Thank you for your patience as we engaged in additional, important conversations around the logistics and details of Summer Hours at MCC.  We know that you have been awaiting information and clarification in order to finalize your personal and departmental plans.

The most frequently asked question over the past several days has been: Are summer hours optional?

The answer is: Yes

The goal of Summer Hours is to provide an opportunity for MCC employees to rest and recharge by shifting the College's operating hours on Fridays to 8:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., beginning Friday, June 11 and ending July 29.

  • We realize that not all employees are in a position to shift their schedule and work additional hours during the week to allow them to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays.
  • If your commitments outside of work (i.e., additional job, transportation needs, child care needs) OR the specific nature of your MCC job or departmental responsibilities do not allow you to adjust your schedule to participate in Summer Hours, you may continue to work your normal schedule.
  • If you continue to work your normal schedule June 11 - July 29, you will be working Friday afternoons (or evenings, depending on your shift) after 1:00 p.m. when public-facing operations and services are not being offered.  The College is not closing at 1:00 p.m.  We will have employees working who opted not to participate in Summer Hours or whose job or departmental responsibilities prevent them from doing so.

Next steps:

  1. Decide if you will opt in OR out of Summer Hours, and notify your department head prior to June 11.
  2. Collaborate with your colleagues and department head to determine schedules.
  3. Department heads will communicate with their respective Cabinet member about which employees are participating in Summer Hours.

Questions:

  1. If everyone in my department wants to participate in Summer Hours, do we have to identify one person to stay until 4:45 p.m. every Friday?  No.  Everyone may adjust their schedules to allow them to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays since the public-facing operating hours end at 1:00 p.m.
  2. What if I'm the only one in my department who wants to participate in Summer Hours?  Work out a schedule with your department head that allows you to work additional hours during the week so that you can leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays when public-facing operations and services cease.  Your colleagues who are not participating in Summer Hours will continue to work their normal schedules; they will not work additional hours during the week and will leave at their regular time on Fridays.
  3. I'd like to opt in to Summer Hours.  What if I use accrued time (Sick, Personal, or Vacation) on a Friday during Summer Hours.  Do I still have to use 7 hours if I work a 35-hour week?  8 hours if I work a 40-hour week?  No.  You only need to use the number of hours that you are scheduled to work under your Summer Hours schedule for Fridays.
  4. I'm one of only a couple people in my department who are working our normal schedule and not opting into the Summer Hours schedule.  What are we supposed to do on Friday afternoons?  Please work with your supervisor to identify potential projects or assignments within your department and job title that you may complete on Friday afternoons after 1:00 p.m. when public-facing operations and services are not available.
  5. What about College holidays that fall on Fridays during Summer Hours?  It has been suggested that offices simply work a "normal" schedule these weeks (vs. a Summer Hours schedule) since the College is closed on the Friday.
