Promoting Growth Mindset in our Students by OUR Making Mistakes (… can anyone spot mine below?)

In an earlier Trib Post on Growth Mindset my Brighton TCC Colleague, Amy Burtner, spoke of how we as teachers are accustomed to correcting students’ mistakes and how we can grow our own mindsets by thinking of our own mistakes as specific areas for personal and professional improvement.

Really Amy?  Professors don’t make mistakes, do we?  Oh, yes we do!  At least this professor does. And students notice… and they appreciate how we own up to our mistakes, admit we’re human and use mistakes to grow.  Faculty mistakes provide a wonderful way to explore growth mindset! Yes, people – and especially students – LOVE to catch other peoples’ mistakes!

As Amy so eloquently stated, it’s the “how we think about” part of making mistakes that is what growth mindset is all about.  The same goes for our students.  But how can we, as professors, help our students fully grasp this important concept of ‘growth mindset?’  Well, here’s where your Teaching and Creativity Center (TCC) can help!

Please consider joining us and enjoy some relevant learning, conversation and takeaways involving “Student Growth Mindsets” at our next TCC Conversation— at Damon on Monday, Nov. 7, College Hour (Executive Conference Room 5057) with facilitators: Audra Dion (Global Educ/COS) & LaQuanna Sparkman, (ESOL/Transitional Studies) as we look at how faculty can help college students use a growth mindset to improve their course work.  Audra and LaQuanna are putting together a resource-full and discussion-rich conversation with your colleagues.

We hope to see you there!
