Business Journal Article Features Learning Models at MCC

In the Sept. 25 issue of the Rochester Business Journal, MCC was among the local colleges featured in an article on hybrid and HyFlex learning.

College leaders shared what they believe are keys to success when it comes to hybrid learning and discussed how big a role this model could play post-COVID.

Dr. Andrea C. Wade, provost and vice president of academic services, explained how MCC offered students a variety of distance-learning options plus a limited number of in-person labs/courses this fall while keeping the health, safety and well-being of students and employees at the forefront. MCC adopted the modalities to also ensure a smooth transition in delivering instruction in the event a COVID-19 outbreak mid-semester causes the college to switch to fully remote learning.

Dr. Wade complimented faculty for maximizing quality of teaching and learning since spring 2020.

In spring 2021, she said, MCC will add the HyFlex mode to its list of learning options available to students. A HyFlex course makes it possible for students -- at their convenience and choice on a daily basis -- to participate either online or in person in ways that lead to equivalent learning outcomes. Students can come to campus and sit in a classroom. They can log in at the same time, see the instructor and interact. Or they can log in at a different time, go back and view the lecture.

"This gives students the ability to continue to learn even if something unexpected happens," such as when their car breaks down or their child becomes sick. "I predict this modality is only going to expand."
