Professor Dale Abbey, Geosciences (Retired)

Monroe Community College mourns the loss of Professor Emeritus of Geosciences Dale Abbey. A respected MCC retiree, Professor Abbey passed away on September 18, 2021 at the age of 82 in Sanford, North Carolina (obituary).

We are grateful for Professor Emeritus Abbey’s service to the college and for the many ways he inspired colleagues and students. 

Professor Emeritus Abbey joined MCC as an instructor in the Department of Geosciences in 1971. He taughte GEO 101 and topics such as "Great Mysteries of the Earth" and "Geology of Man" and enjoyed hosting field trips for students. A member of the National Association of Geology Teachers and the Scottsville Fire Department, Professor Emeritus Abbey inspired colleagues by his commitment to professional development, service to the Faculty Senate, and giving back as a team captain for MCC's United Way Campaign. The MCC Board of Trustees recognized his 33 years of distinguished service by bestowing him with the rank of Professor Emeritus in 2004.

Professor Emeritus Abbey is survived by his wife Carol Braun Abbey; daughters Beth Heckman and husband Cyad, Patricia McRhoads and partner Bri McRhoads, Rachel Abbey; brother Earl Abbey; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, North Carolina today, September 27 at 2:00 p.m.
