One Week from Today MCC is Going Purple to #ShineThe Light on Domestic Violence

Thursday, October 20th the Civility Committee and CAB are turning MCC purple to “Shine the Light” on domestic violence.  Purple is the symbolic color for Domestic Violence Awareness and October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.  “Shine the Light” is a state-wide campaign coordinated by the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (NYSOPDV) that connects communities by turning the state purple to raise awareness about domestic violence.  Together we can let victims and survivors know that they are not alone, share information about available resources, and work to eradicate domestic violence in our community.

MCC campus entrance signs on East Henrietta Road and Brighton Henrietta Town Line Road, and the MCC sign visible from I-390 will be illuminated in purple October 17th – 20th.

We need your help on October 20th to “Shine the Light” on domestic violence.

Why is it important to “Shine the Light” on domestic violence?

Nearly 80% of females reported experiencing at least one incident of physical or sexual aggression by the end of college (Source: NYSOPDV Dating Abuse Fact Sheet).  The 2016 Monroe County Domestic Violence Report to the Community tells us that 4,804 reports of domestic violence were made in Monroe County in 2015, up 2% from 2014.  Also, Monroe County rates are 50% higher than statewide rates, and City of Rochester rates are 2.5 times the statewide rates.

Everyone has the right to have a healthy relationship.  Please help MCC “Shine the Light” on domestic violence on October 20th.
