Professor Mary DiSano to Represent Faculty at the 2022 Commencement as the Faculty Marshal

Leading the ceremonies for MCC’s 2022 Commencement will be Faculty Marshal, Mary DiSano. In her role as Faculty Marshal, Professor DiSano will represent MCC faulty as the macebearer and lead the faculty processional.

Professor DiSano has been a leader in the Chemistry and Geosciences Department and at the College. For the department, Professor DiSano served as the Chemistry Coordinator and on several departmental committees including the Retention, Tenure, Promotion committee and many faculty search committees. Professor DiSano developed the CHE 136 Introductory Forensic Science course at the request of Criminal Justice Department and acquired grant funds to purchase required instrumentation. She also served as the chair of MCC’s Advisory Board for the AS Degree in Chemistry and was the department’s SUNY Assessment Coordinator.

While at MCC, Professor DiSano successfully instructed students from introductory level chemistry courses through MCC’s most advanced organic chemistry courses.  Mary embraced teaching and learning techniques as academia transitioned over the years from chalk on a blackboard to overhead projectors to PowerPoint to flipped classrooms to remote learning, all the while incorporating the most effective aspects for teaching and learning from each technique.

For the College, Professor DiSano served as a Faculty Senator and participated in SCAA and the Professional Development committees. She served as part of MCC’s General Education Steering committee, the Middle States Self Study team, and on the Writing Across the Curriculum committee.

Most recently, Professor DiSano was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching 2021-2022 for going “above and beyond” to serve students both directly through her teaching and indirectly through her unwavering commitment to her department and colleagues.

Professor DiSano said some of her favorite memories at MCC were participating in the Chemistry and Geosciences professional development field trips. In retirement, Mary plans to spend time with family and friends while more fully pursuing painting, gardening, landscaping, and home improvement projects.

Please help me in congratulating Faculty Marshal Mary DiSano on her dedication to MCC, her colleagues, and our students.
