International Education Week & Geography Awareness Week Events in November

SAVE THE DATE: International Education Week and Geography Awareness Week

MAPPING OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD
November 14 – 18, 2016
Brighton and Damon City Campuses

The Office of Global Education and International Service and the Geography Program invite students, faculty and staff to their week-long series of events in celebration of International Education Week and Geography Awareness week.  Our theme is MAPPING OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD and will feature the unveiling of the one-of-a-kind World Maps Gallery. See attached schedule for a list of events, times and locations.

Highlights of the week include:

THE WORLD MAPS GALLERY:
A permanent gallery of 15 world maps showcasing aspects of human geography and physical geography will be installed throughout the Brighton Campus and shown as a temporary poster display at the Damon City Campus.  As in an art gallery or museum, the maps will have a display label explaining the map as well as a QR Code that students can scan with their smart phone, tablet or lap top to get additional information and ways to interact.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Dr. Patricia Solis is the founder of YouthMappers, Co-Director of the Center for Geospatial Technology, and Research Associate Professor at Texas Tech University.  Dr. Solis will talk about open source mapping and the way college students can address real world challenges through geospatial technology and mapping.

WAR INTERPRETED
Join us for a unique discussion with MCC Veterans and Iraqi & Afghani students who served the U.S. military in wartime.  What did they understand about each other’s cultures before meeting and working together; how did those understandings change and evolve; and ultimately, what did they learn from their cross-cultural experience and dialogue?

Contact the Office of Global Education and International Services for more information.
