Chemistry Faculty/Students Conduct Outreach at Destiny House

Earlier in July, chemistry faculty and MCC students conducted an outreach event for children staying at the Destiny House at Wilson Commencement Park in Rochester.  The hour long event included a variety of hands-on activities investigating the chemistry of candies. MCC volunteers guided the children through experiments related to the acidity of sour candies, floating m’s of M&M’s, why Pop Rocks pop, and creating “gummy worms” with sodium alginate and calcium chloride.   Volunteers consisted of current MCC students, Chelsea Davis and Sommer Le, former MCC student Shannon DeSell, and chemistry faculty Ryan Clemens and Brian Edelbach.  Thank you to all the volunteers for making the event a success.  If anyone is interested in participating in future outreach events, please contact Ryan Clemens at rclemens@monroecc.edu.
