March Brightspace Updates

Our Virtual Campus team has been working around the clock to plan for a successful migration from Blackboard to Brightspace! We appreciate your questions and your patience. We wanted to take an opportunity to provide an update on what we know so far about the transition. Please know that many decisions are still being finalized by SUNY, but we are making steady progress to prepare for a summer pilot and fall launch.

  1. Please check our MCC migration website for regular updates including a timeline, resources, FAQs, training, and more: https://sites.monroecc.edu/brightspace/. Bookmark this website and visit often. The information changes weekly!
  2. We have 30+ faculty volunteers to pilot their courses this summer in Brightspace. Thank you to our testers! SUNY will be helping us set up faculty accounts and courses in our Brightspace tenant for our pilot faculty. All other faculty will be added at a later date, but we will announce access when it becomes available.
  3. We have been asked how faculty can explore Brightspace to get comfortable in the new environment. We encourage you to use the SUNY sandbox. Please visit our website and click on the “Get to Know Brightspace” tab to find details on signing up for the sandbox and the export/import process. This space will give you a chance to explore the base features of Brighspace.
  4. If you like to work ahead, you can begin setting up a course in the sandbox. You can easily import your course from Blackboard and make adjustments. If you need to request extra course shells, you should use the “Help” tab in the sandbox to Email D2L and request extra course shells. Anything you create in this space can be later exported and imported to preserve your work.
  5. Many of our faculty have reached out about training opportunities for Brightspace. Currently training is open to our pilot faculty, but will open up shortly for all faculty. Asynchronous training modules will be available on or around April 11th. This training is provided by SUNY Center for Professional Development (CPD). Please visit our training website for more details. We will let you know when registration opens for all faculty.
  6. For the summer and fall semesters, our priority is to first transition our academic courses to Brightspace. As soon as we have this under control, we can make a plan for our Blackboard organizations. Our current plan is that organizations will live in Blackboard during the fall semester until December 21, 2022.  We are exploring the best home for all of the content that lives in a Blackboard organization on a case-by-case basis, so more information will be shared as it becomes available.
  7. Please visit our FAQ page for more commonly asked questions!
