CCTE Faculty Fellow Hosts Town Hall Meeting at MCC

Congratulations to CCTE Faculty Fellow Angelique Johnston who successfully organized a student Town Hall meeting for 100 students held at the Brighton Campus yesterday.  Johnston, an MCC English Instructor,  has worked collaboratively with Faculty Fellows from Monroe High School, SOTA, and Rush-Henrietta High School throughout the semester.  Fellows have used a Problem-Based Learning approach to work on diverse learning goals for their students.  Critical reading and writing, deeper student engagement in reading and writing, and student performance on both formative and summative writing-based assessments are among the primary goals teachers had for the project.

Students in participating English classes have been using an online student forum to write about issues in education.  The Town Hall gathering allowed students to meet face-to-face for the 1st time and discuss their research in relation to the challenge of creating a perfect high school.  Fellows will be assessing the impact of their work later this semester, and their action research reports will be available on the CCTE website, <https://www.communitycenterforteachingexcellence.org/>.

Further information on the Fellows Program can also be found on the website, along with application materials for spring 2013.

CCTE would like to extend special thanks to Dean Kristen Fragnoli who served as keynote speaker for the event, and Jodi Oriel in the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development who organized campus tours given by MCC Student Leaders.  Our high school guests especially enjoyed the campus tours with Student Leaders, and the great food provided by Sodexo.  We also appreciate the flexibility and support provided by Campus Events which helped make the day a great success.
