President's Wednesday Message

As part of the Academies/Schools initiative and the overall College goal of improving student retention and completion, our faculty have been actively working to include High-Impact Practices (HIPs) in their classes and curriculum. This Saturday, we will celebrate our students' engagement in applied learning and research, a key high impact practice, in the eighth annual Scholars' Day.

Scholars' Day provides an opportunity for our students to share their undergraduate research across all disciplines. Their work is exemplary--and they have been able to shine so brightly because of our faculty who have mentored them and nurtured their scholarship. MCC's efforts in advancing students as scholars is one of the many aspects of our College that sets us--and our students--apart. This high-impact practice does much more than improve student retention and completion: it better prepares them for success after they leave MCC. Our students transfer with experience in research commensurate to that of university-native peers, and they enter into the workforce understanding the commitment, persistence, and teamwork it takes to bring a project successfully to closure.

Throughout the process leading up to Scholars' Day, our students have been supported. Now I ask you to show your support one more time: attend the students' sessions on Saturday. You will be richly rewarded by our students' joy and enthusiasm for learning and their intelligence and innovation in research. Your presence on Saturday means the world to our students and to their friends and family (who often come out to cheer them on with great pride).

My thanks goes out to the Scholars' Day Committee and to all the faculty who have dedicated themselves to our student-scholars. For more information on Scholars' Day past and present, visit the committee's website. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday; it will be an inspiring day!

What are you most looking forward to this Scholars' Day? Share your thoughts on the blog.
