From Sea to Shining Sea ... or Lake!

The Geosciences Faculty successfully led a professional development experience on the William Scandling research vessel (operated through Hobart and William Smith Colleges) on Seneca Lake on June 26th!  Faculty and staff boarded the vessel where they then conducted lake-floor sediment dredge collection and analysis, plankton identification using a plankton net and microscope, lake chemistry determination of dissolved oxygen and conductivity, invasive species collection and identification, as well as lake clarity and attenuation using a Secchi disk.

This experience allowed faculty and staff both within and outside of the sciences to experience field techniques and data collection in an active field setting.  It also allowed colleagues to bond a bit with folks they may not normally work with at MCC, as well as discuss possible collaborations and ways to incorporate information learned about the local environment into the classroom setting in a variety of disciplines.  Plus, it could have not been a more beautiful day to spend on the lake!

Special thanks to Provost/V.P. Jeff Bartkovich and the Division of Academic Services for providing the funding to support this professional development opportunity.

Please see attached photos for a few shots from the vessel!
