RCSD to Bring RECIHS Students to Downtown Campus

Late last week, the school board of the Rochester City School District approved terms that will bring 11th- and 12th-grade Rochester Early College International High School students (RECIHS) to MCC's Downtown Campus for the 2017-18 academic year.

Under the proposed agreement, RECIHS students will take high school classes (exclusive of college operations) and some will enroll in select MCC classes based on their college readiness. RECIHS students, faculty and staff will use four classrooms and science labs. RECIHS staff will have office space on the campus to administer the project with MCC. RECIHS students will have use of shared spaces, such as lounges, café, learning commons and computer labs, based on availability.

The RECIHS partnership program can accommodate up to 133 juniors and seniors; a minimum of 70 is expected.

It has always been the hope to have RECIHS students incorporated into the College campus. MCC's ties to RECIHS go back to 2010 when the high school was launched as part of the Smart Scholars initiative through SUNY with the goal of making college a reality for at-risk and underrepresented students and strengthening the education pipeline in the Greater Rochester area. MCC, RCSD, St. John Fisher College and the Asia Society (a national nonprofit with school planning experience) are partners of the high school.

MCC established a similar partnership with P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) in Rochester in 2014. Currently, both P-TECH and RECIHS offer dual-enrollment courses through MCC, allowing students to get a head start on college. As with our partnership with RECIHS, the intention is to bring P-TECH students into the MCC fold as much as possible.

Dr. Kim McKinsey-Mabry, Dean of Business and Community Engagement, will serve as MCC's administrative lead for the project and work with RCSD personnel to ensure RECIHS students successfully transition to a college environment. Dr. Medea Rambish, Dean of Academic Foundations, will serve as the operational lead for MCC for this project.
