SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professorship

Once every three years, the College has the opportunity to nominate a candidate to SUNY for the Distinguished Teaching Professorship. The Distinguished Teaching Professorship recognizes a sustained record of outstanding teaching at the graduate, undergraduate or professional levels. The Distinguished Faculty Rank is an academic rank above that of full professor and is conferred solely by the SUNY Board of Trustees.  I hope you will review the SUNY-established criteria and consider nominating one or more of your valued colleagues for this prestigious honor.

Eligible faculty must meet the following:

Academic Rank: Candidates must have attained the rank of full professor.

Length of Service: Candidates must have held the rank of full professor for five years, have completed at least three years of full-time teaching on the campus that recommends the appointment and ten years of full-time teaching with the System.

Criteria for Selection: The primary criterion for appointment to the rank is skill in teaching, with evidence the nominee’s work has elevated the standards of colleagues at their institution or the field in general. Consideration shall also be given to mastery of subject matter, sound scholarship, service to the College and the broader community, and to continuing growth.

Please understand that there is a difference between the Distinguished Teaching Professorship and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Nomination files for the candidates for the Distinguished Teaching Professorship must provide clear and substantial evidence that the nominees are or have been involved for some significant period of time in developing or promoting excellence in teaching through pedagogical methods and/or principles or in substantive educational enhancement either in their disciplines or to meet community needs on a regional, national, or international level.

Because of the strict confidentiality required by SUNY, please send names for nomination to Kathy Blain in Academic Services by November 10 *without* advising the nominees.  I have selected a representative of Academic Services and a representative of the Faculty Senate to serve on a review committee. A substantial nomination packet must be submitted to the review committee to assure the candidates meet the requirements. The committee will review nomination packets and forward their recommendation to me for final approval.

Thank you for taking the time to recognize the excellence of your faculty colleagues.
