Passing of Maria Echaniz, Professor Emeritus

I am sad to inform the college community that Professor Emeritus Maria Echaniz, formerly of MCC’s Foreign Language Department, passed away on August 31, 2015 at the age of 81.

A funeral service was held last Saturday at St. Louis Church, 64 Main St, Pittsford. In lieu of flowers, a mass may be offered in her memory. To share a memory of Maria or send a condolence to the family, please visit: <https://www.anthonychapels.com> .

After earning a B.A. and M.A. in Spanish from the University of Rochester and a diploma in Hispanic Studies from the University of Madrid, Maria began her MCC career in 1966 as an assistant professor. Quickly recognized as an enthusiastic and effective teacher who was devoted to her students, Maria was promoted to associate professor three years later. In 1979, she assumed the rank of professor. More than a dedicated teacher, Maria served as department chair for many years. Known as a conscientious and cooperative colleague, she lent her cheerful approach to many college-wide committees and initiatives until her retirement in 1999.

Maria was predeceased by parents, Jose and Dulce Maria Echaniz. She is survived by brothers, Jose (Judith) and Carlos (Joanne) Echaniz; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
