The Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series

The Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series is an annual event that brings the campus community together to celebrate the legacies and service of distinguished retirees. As part of the event, retirees reflect on their time at MCC with a lecture inspired by Randy Pausch's The Last Lecture. In 2013, the Legacy Lecture Series was renamed in remembrance of our colleague Carmen Powers. Carmen's career-long and passionate commitment to her students, colleagues, and College was immeasurable. The intent of the Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series is to share and preserve MCC's collective professional and institutional wisdom. Every year, members of the MCC community are enthusiastically encouraged to nominate a fellow employee they know is retiring and who would like to share a special remembrance or particular perspective gleaned throughout their MCC career.

The moments of reflection facilitated by the Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series are essential to ensuring that, while people move on, their legacies and institutional memories forever remain a part of our campus community. Because the Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series is so important to MCC's culture of recognition, we are taking a different approach this year. Over the course of the next few days, some of this year's honorees will share reflections of their time at MCC in the Daily Tribune. This year's honorees are Christine Abbott, Karen Coffey, Joan Mullaney, Louis Silvers, and Bess Watts. Together they have 165 years of collective wisdom to share with us. Please take a moment to read about their time at MCC, the knowledge they are leaving behind, and how we can use that knowledge to continue to make MCC a place of teaching and learning excellence.

In addition to their reflections, the MCC Foundation is awarding a scholarship to five students on behalf of each honoree. The Faculty Senate would like to thank the MCC Foundation for their continued generosity and support of the Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series.

In this edition of the Tribune, Joan Mullaney will kick off the series with her almost 50 years of dedicated service to MCC. Thank you to all our honorees. We wish you the best.
