Passing of Jim Schwender, Professor Emeritus with Distinguished Service in Registration and Records

The MCC family was saddened to hear of the recent passing of James "Jim" Schwender, professor emeritus who led Registration and Records for nearly two decades, at the age of 82.

Professor Emeritus Schwender joined MCC as director of Registration and Records and associate professor in 1978 and continued serving in that leadership capacity for 17 years. He was promoted to the rank of professor in 1984.

Among his many attributes was his expertise in planning for the College, inherently necessary to the operation of Registration and Records Office and the establishment of valid enrollment projections. A particular strength was his ability to prepare reports expeditiously, whether they involved enrollment patterns or attrition statistics.

In addition to effectively and efficiently administering the registration and records process, he also helped foster a climate of interdivisional cooperation.

In 1991, he received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service in recognition of his solid leadership and outstanding commitment to enhancing efficiencies.

Professor Emeritus Schwender was always willing to assist others whenever asked, stepping forward to assist the college in many different roles. In 1995, he became director of Master Schedule and Academic Services. Two years later, he briefly served as interim director of Student Services for Damon City Campus, then briefly assumed the position of acting associate vice president for Curriculum and Program Development.

He was active on various college committees. His service to the college included assuming a role on the MCC Faculty Senate and sitting on the Title IV College Re-certification Committee.

Upon his retirement in 1996 after 18 years of service, he was accorded the rank of professor emeritus.

Professor Emeritus Schwender earned a master's degree in teaching social studies in the secondary school and a bachelor's degree in history and government, both from SUNY Buffalo.

We are grateful for Professor Emeritus Schwender's dedication and valuable contributions. He will be missed.

At the time of this posting, his obituary was not available online.
