<p>A Quick Note About What SI Leaders DO NOT Do:</p>

<p>It is important to remember that <strong>SI Leaders are not tutors or teaching assistants</strong>. They utilize active learning techniques to facilitate review sessions that promote further understanding of the material and engage with students with intentional, guided questions to develop problem solving and higher order thinking skills; they <strong>do not</strong> <strong>grade, prepare exams/quizzes, or re-lecture course material.</strong> <strong>They</strong> <strong>will not &ldquo;spoon-feed&rdquo; answers or course content</strong>.</p>

<p>What SI Leaders Do:</p>

<p>Supplemental Instruction (<strong>SI</strong>) Leaders are highly trained to do the following:</p>

<ol>
<li>Promote higher order thinking and problem solving skills, to develop independent, intentional learners</li>
<li>Facilitate active learning through collaboration</li>
<li>Combine <strong><em>how</em></strong> to learn with <strong><em>what</em></strong> to learn--<strong>with greater emphasis on <em>how</em> to learn</strong></li>
<li>Foster a low-stakes learning environment in which learning can be messy--to bolster student confidence and reduce fear or anxieties generally associated with learning</li>
<li>Empower students to navigate their own mistakes while offering guidance and support</li>
<li>Utilize various questioning techniques to guide, probe, and redirect thinking</li>
<li>Help students connect and engage with content, to promote meaningful learning and increase knowledge retention</li>
<li>Support the development of skills that will aid student success not only in the present, but across multiple courses and real-world contexts in the future</li>
<li>Provide assistance with technology-related issues that have presented barriers in the current learning environment</li>
</ol>

<p>Who Is Eligible?</p>

<p>SI Leaders must be current students at MCC who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, organization, and time management skills--and who have previously earned an A or a B+ in one or more of the courses listed above (Students will eventually need to provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member to verify eligibility):</p>
