Helping Students Engage Rochester Art, History, and Culture

As previously announced, MCC's Institute for the Humanities will present Rochester Remembers the 60s: The Legacy of Social Justice Activism, on October 12 and 13. This, our inaugural event, will celebrate local contributions to national movements. Our aim is to bring the public together with scholars and students to discuss progress, problems, and potential. This event directly engages history, political science, philosophy, literature, photography, visual art, sports, music, geography, sociology, theology, and psychology. Please encourage - even incentivize - students to participate in this exploration of our region's history. This program is free and open to the entire MCC community. The schedule is as follows:

Friday, October 12: (6:00 - 8:30 PM)

  • Screening of the documentary July '64 and post-show discussion with the film's director, Carvin Eison

Saturday, October 13: (9:30 AM - 1:30 PM)

  • Keynote Address: Dr. Marvin McMickle, President of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School

  • Scholarly Panel: Tokeya Graham (MCC, ENG), Joe Scanlon (MCC, POLI SCI), and Daniel Borus (U of R, HIS) explore ways literature, sports, and student activism influenced national politics and culture in 1968

  • Youth Panel: Rochester teens consider the impact of social justice activism on life in the city today--Moderated by artists Shawn Dunwoody and Carmelo Ortiz.

Photo Exhibition:

Archival photographs of the 1964 Rochester "Race Riot" and 1967 F.I.G.H.T. protest at the Kodak shareholders' meeting; Images of present-day Rochester captured by city youth photographers exploring the theme of change.
