2017 Conference for the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa

Krista Rodriguez, Associate Professor in Dental Studies and her COIL partner, Dr. Anisa Vahed, Senior Lecturer, Dental Technology Programme at Durban University of Technology (DUT) submitted an abstract which was accepted for presentation at the 2017 Conference for the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa. The HELTASA conference theme was: Higher Education Well-Being, Transcending Boundaries, Reframing Excellence and it was sponsored by DUT and held in Durban, South Africa November 21 - 24.

Krista and Anisa's abstract was entitled: "Collaborative Online International Learning: An Innovative Initiative to Engage Students Globally". The presentation on November 23 was given by Dr. Vahed as Professor Rodriguez was unable to attend the conference. The abstract is included in the HELTASA Programme and Book of Abstracts on the DUT website.

COIL has been an enriching experience for both faculty members and they will continue their collaborative project in spring 2018. They are collaborating on a journal paper evaluating their COIL project using the FRATE framework to assess student engagement and collaboration.
