Disability Awareness Month - Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights act that was signed into law in 1990. The law guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities. The ADA was the first comprehensive piece of legislation to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities. In 2008, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) was signed and the act made significant changes to the ADA's definition of the word "disability".

Senator Harkin shares the history of the ADA and how his brother Frank, inspired his work with the ADA. Senator Harkin shares how we can all celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ADA in the short video, "ADA 30th Anniversary from Tom Harkin".

To recognize the 30th anniversary of the ADA, please refer the timeline of the ADA.

We can all spread awareness to honor the 30th anniversary of the ADA.

Kindly,
