President's Wednesday Message

Welcome to my first Wednesday Message to the college community!

With these short weekly missives, I want to give you a sense of my perspective on the conversations that are happening at and around MCC and community colleges.  Today, I simply want to introduce you to the notion of a college-wide dialogue on issues that will likely impact all of us in community colleges.  These may be topics that have always been fundamental to our mission (like access or student success) or those that seem to have just appeared over the horizon (like open source educational resources or green technologies).

MCC is an innovative, responsive college, with a well-deserved reputation as a national leader, and this recognition is due to you:  your thoughts, dedication, energy, and action.  The good news is that so much of the great work that we do each day at MCC on behalf of our students and our community is finally coming into the national spotlight.  This weekend, at the dedication of the Army Strong Community Center in Irondequoit, I ran into Congressman Eric Massa, who noted that this will be the “year of community colleges.”  I added that, because of many changes in our student population that you can see each day at MCC, it will more likely be the decade of community colleges!  These are exciting times, and I look forward to sharing this excitement with all of you.

So, watch this space each week for updates and invitations to participate in the discussion.  Each week, I’ll give you a “next on the Wednesday Message” preview, so that you know what to expect.  And, I welcome your feedback on each message with the goal of truly opening up a dialogue around these topics.  So, here’s the first preview . . . next Wednesday, why should we care about economic development, anyway?
