Baseball team falls in district finals

The MCC baseball team reached the finals of the Northeast District Tournament before falling to host Allegany College of Maryland Sunday afternoon.  The Tribunes finish the season with a record of 40-18.

MCC opened the tournament Saturday morning against No.2 ranked Lenoir Community College (North Carolina).  The Lancers came out strong, plating seven runs in the bottom of the first.  The Tribunes managed just five hits in a 12-2 loss.

Adam Curynski (Webster, NY/Schroeder) was responsible for the MCC offense, hitting a two-run double in the top of the second.

The Tribunes then turned around and took on Allegany in game two.  MCC scored three runs in each of the first three innings to race to a 9-2 lead on the way to a 10-4 victory.

Robb Meng (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) paced the offense, going 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs.  Nelson Santos (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) was 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, while Harrison Harber (Kanata, Canada/Earl of March) added a home run and two runs batted in.  Adam Marx (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Curynski also added home runs for the Tribunes.

With all three teams 1-1 after Saturday’s action, MCC hit Sunday having to win two games to claim the title.  MCC once again opened up against Lenoir and opened up a 6-1 lead on the strength of RBI singles by Marx and Kyle Hall (Basom, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) and a homer by Santos.

The Lancers came back strong, however, plating four runs in the third and seven more in the fifth top open a 12-7 lead.  Santos continued his hot hitting in the top of the sixth, ripping a tape-measure three-run homer to cut the lead to 12-10.

Lenoir continued to battle and built the lead to 15-11 heading into the top of the ninth. Curynski reached on a fielder’s choice before a flyout had MCC down to its final out.  Meng extended the inning with a single and Santos drove in a run with another base hit.  After a walk loaded the bases, Ryan Sullivan (Hilton, NY/Hilton) was hit by a pitch to force in a run and cut the lead to 15-13.

That brought Marx to the plate, and the first baseman delivered a two-run single to force extra innings.

Curynski, who came on to pitch in the eighth, shut down the potent Lenoir offense long enough for the Tribunes to mount another rally.  MCC scored three in the top of the 11th and held the Lancers off the board for the win.

Santos had a monster game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with the two home runs, five runs scored, and five RBIs.  Meng had four hits, while Sullivan had two hits and two RBIs.  Tony Fuller (Rochester, NY/Penfield) finished with three hits and two runs batted in.

Though drained both physically and emotionally following the extra-inning nail-biter, Monroe was able to race to a 6-1 lead over Allegany College in the title game.  Santos hit another home run and Marx added a two-run double to help the cause.

But the Trojans answered with authority, scoring nine runs in the fourth to break open the game.  Allegany scored early and often and went on to a 27-11 win.

Santos finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, and four RBIs.  Mark Stuckless (Kanata, Canada/A.Y. Jackson) added three hits and two runs scored.

The 40 wins are a single-season record for MCC.
