RBJ Covers Horizons Program

In its Aug. 23 issue, the Rochester Business Journal selected the Horizons program at MCC as an example to explain what area institutions are doing to help underserved Rochester-area children prevent summer learning loss and to narrow the achievement gap that develops over the years. The full article is attached below.

Based on reading assessment data from 2012, none of the children in the MCC program lost reading skills and 75 percent made gains in reading skills during the six weeks of the program.

This year, MCC served 64 students, ranging from rising first-graders through rising fourth-graders. In addition, the program offered an experiential learning opportunity for several MCC education majors, who served as teaching assistants.

MCC’s tuition-free, full-day summer program began July 1 through Aug. 9.
